In the first of our ‘Digital by default’ series of blogs, Dan Turner looks at how school place applications can be more easily managed by local authorities.
During last November’s secondary school applications round, a staggering 461,953 parents and carers* applied for school places online using the Capita One School Admissions Portal. Whilst that figure is impressive, it represents just the beginning of the shift to offering more services online as local authorities focus on further meeting the needs of their communities with a successful digital agenda.
We looked at a snapshot of admissions activity from 1 September 2016 to 1 November 2016, which covered the secondary school admissions process for the 66 local authorities currently using the One School Admissions Portal. With a further 41 local authorities planning to be using the portal for their admissions applications from September 2017, and with more citizens becoming more engaged with accessing local authority services online, you can expect a significant increase on that figure this time next year.
The story doesn’t end there - also particularly illuminating was the breakdown by devices used by parents and carers to make online school applications on the portal: 62% used a mobile device such as a smartphone or tablet, with a relatively small 37% of applicants accessing the system via a desktop. And 1% of parents and carers made their school place applications using a games console, a further indication of a changing digital world.
If you take a look at the infographic which pulls these stats together you can see further detail about operating systems – again, this is important for understanding what your service users are actually seeing on their screen.
The statistics may just be taken as a snapshot in time, but they offer useful insight into the willingness of people to use online options, as long as they are easily accessible. One Admissions & Transfers was being used by nearly half a million school place applicants during the secondary school admissions round because the One School Admissions Portal provides a convenient, simple way to apply, empowering parents and carers by giving them access to what they need, when they need it.
We’re focused on continuing to support you by providing intuitive, customisable self-service portals which your citizens are comfortable using, eliminating the need for onerous data-entry by staff.
