Cardiff City Council needed a system to help improve the efficiency of their complex and increasingly costly home-to- school transport of 850 pupils with special educational or transport needs. They wanted to find a way to reduce carbon emissions, transport costs and management time.
Cardiff used the SEN Vehicle Management tool developed by Higher Mapping Solutions (part of One Route Optimisation). This connects directly with the Capita One system to obtain the relevant data on routes, vehicles, stops and pupils. Planners can group pupils together based on their needs and/or location, and adjust routes to determine new journey times and costs.
The results speak for themselves. The council is saving administrative time that would have otherwise been spent on updating individual pupil records and estimate a total annual cost saving of £400k. Cardiff has reduced carbon emissions by reducing routes by 1,200 miles per day – which also means children’s average journey times are down by 2 miles.
